Sport Minister Zizi Kodwa to Address Banyana Banyana’s Concerns

Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa is set to address concerns made by FIFA Women’s World Cup-bound Banyana Banyana, after the senior national women’s team boycotted their international friendly against Botswana on Sunday, 2 July 2023.

The reigning Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions were scheduled to play against their African counterparts as part of their preparations for the World Cup, however the players cited concerns around the venue, Tsakane Stadium, as unsuitable for playing conditions as well as their unhappiness regarding financial arrangements.

In response, Minister Kodwa shared a statement highlighting these concerns as the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand is in 17 days’ time.

In his statement, the Minister announced that he will be meeting with the South African Football Players Union on Tuesday, 4 July 2023 where they will discuss the serious concerns expressed by the national team.

Kodwa also emphasized the government’s aim to ensure that women’s development, women’s agency and voice, and women’s dignity in sport remains at the centre of their gender equality agenda. He also stated that the players are assured of a safe environment to raise their concerns without fear of victimization.
